More About Katie
Please excuse me if I go on a bit about my granddaughter, Katie.
I spent some time with her yesterday, and it's an amazing blessing to watch her joy as she experiences this world, and her glee as she conquers each new task.
Yesterday, she was taking off her shoe, and it really wasn't TIME to take off her shoe (she was going to need to go walking in a few minutes), so I turned it into a game of refastening the velcro strap that secures the shoe. I showed her a couple of times how to pull the strap tight (AGAINST the loop, not straight out from it!), and she finally did it. When she did, I said, "You did it!" and she said "I did it!" Wow, she had the concept of "you" and "I" correct, not just repeating what I said. A few minutes later, to get her attention off her shoes, I held up one finger and said "One," and she said, "One," then she said, without any prompting from me, "Two... Hree... Fowah... FIE!" as I held up each additional finger. I think she might have simply been reciting the "name" of each finger rather than quantifying them, but hey, that's not bad at all for someone still two months shy of two years old!
A couple of days before that, Jan and I were over there to Katysit while Chad and Sarah had a "date," just going out to eat for the first time since Chad went into and got out of the hospital for the clot in his leg, and Jan and Katie started saying "AAAAAAAA!" to each other. I got out my new iPhone4, which has a movie camera in it, and capture this for you!
I hope you got a big grin out of that!
This morning at breakfast, as a result of a conversation we were having, I began to think about a new version of a recipe. It turns out Grace doesn't like cookie dough because of she doesn't like the flavor of the uncooked flour. (I had thought it was because of the raw eggs.) So I began thinking of flour that's cooked before it is cooked, like in a roux made for gumbo and sauces such. A roux is simply flour cooked in butter before it's mixed into a sauce, to cook the flour before the liquids are added. I am now asking myself the question, what if you took the flour and butter from a cookie recipe and made that into a roux before including it in the dough? Is there enough butter in the recipe for that? Would it affect the flavor of the cookies for better or not? It might be worth a try.
But not today.
Now I have to go get ready for church.
