Update on Grace, Sunday, Aug 29

Sunday. Latest update 11:30 PM.

12:30 PM - Just as we did last week, Jan and I visited Grace on the way to church, then again on the way home from church.

Grace was awake when we arrived for the first visit, but seemed to be still a bit muzzy from sleep.

We mentioned that we had been reading the first chapter of the Gospel of John this morning, and how it was something that needed lots of study and meditation: In the beginning there was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. And more.

Then we got out the study Bible Keith had given her for her birthday, and while it gave a very good discourse on how John was different from all the other Gospels, it wasn't much help on interpreting the first five verses.

I confirmed that she'd had breakfast this morning, and asked if it was any good. She said, "Well, it was not baaad, as breakfasts go." From this I implied that the food tasted just fine, but she was just plain unhappy with having to have the breakfast in a hospital bed.

We talked a bit more about yesterday's activities, the moving and last night's dinner, and laughed at a couple of jokes.

Then it was time for us to leave for church, and Grace got a nap.

When we arrived for the visit after church, Grace admitted she'd had a nice nap, but felt she could maybe sleep a bit more.

She said they told her she'd get a bath this morning, and she was looking forward to that, but she hoped they would have come by now.

Then we talked about the message in the service we attended, which amazingly was about the very same verses we had talked about earlier today. Was that a coincidence? Do we believe in coincidences?

The preacher's explanation of those verses this morning was pretty much in line with what we had discussed earlier, so I was glad to see I wasn't totally off base on my interpretation of it. Either that, or the preacher was as off-base as I am.

Sadly, I couldn't find any football on this afternoon's TV schedule, so it seems Grace will have to do without football on TV one more weekend. We all agreed it should be back in full swing very soon now.

We could tell Grace was still needing some sleep, so we tucked her in, found a church service on TV for her, and left.

We will go back and see here again this afternoon and/or this evening, but I probably won't be able to make it back here to tell you about it until after 8:30 PM my time. Jan and I are going to an event at church at 4PM, then I'm headed to a different event at a different church while Jan will go visit Grace.

I'll be back to write about it after that.

Have a blessed Sabbath, everyone.

11:30 PM - I'm actually posting this early on Monday morning, because when I finally got home last night, granddaughter Katie was here, and of course, she demanded my total attention. Then when she left I went to bed pretty quickly after that. I hope you'll forgive the delay, but at least the posting is here now.

I had gone to a different church event after Jan's and my church membership class, and while I went to that, Jan went to visit Grace. What follows is Jan's report on her visit to Grace.

The first thing I did was tell her all about the new members class we went to at church, the areas they're focusing on, worship, commitment, generosity, and service.

I told her how many people were in the class and who they were, and how I really liked the concept he gave of "next steps" for disciples, taking even one small step at a time instead of trying to take 73 steps at once.

She asked when Bill was going to come visit, and I explained to her that Bill had gone back to Missouri, and she nodded her understanding, although it seems there was a bit of confusion there.

I told her about Shelley, about the phone call we had at lunch, all the doings about her work and the house and the baby. I told her about all the things they'd gotten on Craig's list, like a bassinet and a johnny-jump-up and an appliance to assist with nursing, and how the lady who sold her the appliance gave her some baby blankets just because she had them and didn't need them.

We talked a bit about Craig's list, about how you can get some really good bargains there.

I told her about the text message exchange David had with Chad right after church.

Here's that exchange so you can see it:

CHAD: Are you guys in church? I could swear I just saw you drive down Old Canton Rd 10 minutes ago.

DAVID: We went to 9:30 service at CUMC, then to visit Grace. We WERE driving home about 10 minutes ago! Fixing stroganoff for lunch now. Where are y'all?

CHAD: At the reservoir overlook on the Trace. Eating picnic/snack lunch :)

DAVID: Sounds fun!

...and I told her how Katie was so happy to see the BIG WATER. When her daddy was that age and first saw the ocean, he said, in a mightily impressed tone, "BIIIIIIIIG WATER!"

Grace asked where David was and I said he had gone to a men's group, kind of like UMW circle but for men. (One of Grace's fun things to do before the accident was to go to the Madison UMC's United Methodist Women's Circle meeting once a month, so she identified with that.)

I told her that month-end was coming up so it would be a busy week for me and she nodded her understanding. Month-end is when all the monthly reports are due where I work, so it's a big hustle and bustle time as we scramble to put all the information together into the reports.

Then Chad and Sarah and Katie came in, and she smiled so big when she saw them. She smiled especially when she saw Katie of course.

Then we all visited together for about 10 minutes, talking about this and that, then Chad and Sarah left to go to a movie while Katie and I stayed for a few minutes more, then we left, too.

Mom was still unhappy about her tummy troubles, things are just not where they need to be, so it would be great if you could pray for that situation to resolve soon.

I asked her did she get supper, and she said yes, it was chicken noodle casserole, but she couldn't eat much of it. She started to tell me something about the person who brought it, but she lost her train of thought.

That's it.

This is David again. I plan to visit Grace Monday morning about 10AM my time, then do a few lunchtime errands. I'll post about Grace's visit when I return.

Have a wonderful week, everyone!
